The Salem Zen Center is committed to honesty in speech and action, fostering trust within the community. Confidentiality is respected, and transparency is upheld in all relationships and leadership roles.
Respect and Non-Harm: We cultivate a safe, inclusive environment free from harm, harassment, or exploitation. All interactions should be based on mutual respect, kindness, and mindfulness.
Ethical Leadership and Responsibility: Leaders and teachers must act with integrity, avoiding misuse of power or financial influence. Relationships between teachers and students should remain professional, ensuring a dynamic built on trust rather than personal gain.
Community and Stewardship: Each member contributes to the well-being of the organization, upholding ethical standards, resolving conflicts with compassion, and supporting the sustainability of the community.
Accountability and Growth: Ethical concerns should be addressed through established procedures as outlined in the Salem Zen Center Code of Ethics document, ensuring a fair process.
Anyone assuming a leadership position—including practice leaders (Tantos), Transmitted teachers (currently Lee Ann Nail, Roshi), senior students, and the Board of Directors—agrees to conduct themselves in accordance with this Ethics Code.
Nothing herein limits any person's right to engage with police or other enforcement authorities. Nothing herein supersedes the powers and responsibilities of the SZC Board of Directors, as described in the bylaws.
